BI Tools and Practices; Order Management Systems; Best of Breed vs. All-in-One; Performance Measurement and Attribution Practices

Topics Covered Include:

BI Tools and Practices: As data management strategies mature, firms are looking for more sophisticated tools to support data mining and business analysis. This research will evaluate the Business Intelligence (BI) tools available in the market and identify leading practices in the use of BI tools amongst our members.

Order Management Systems: We last reviewed order management and compliance systems in October 2007. How have these products evolved in the past few years to support the current market demands? Where are vendors focusing their efforts? This research will provide a detailed review of the OMS offerings in the market, and will identify expanded capabilities and the future direction of these products.

Performance Measurement and Attribution Practices: At various times, responsibility for performance measurement and attribution has been housed in the front, middle and/or back office; it has belonged to portfolio management, investment accounting, client service, or been a standalone function. Bespoke systems coexist with vendor offerings, and today many vendors offer performance services on an ASP, SaaS and/or fully outsourced basis. Building on our prior research that focused on vendor systems, this research will examine current practices around performance measurement and attribution, including GIPS compliance, organization models, and types of solutions in place to support a wide range of assets.

Best of Breed vs. All-in-One – Living with the Decision: System selection is a constant struggle between choosing the “best possible solution” or taking an integrated approach. But beyond the question of functionality, the decision has implications for ease of implementation, management of data, cost of operation and maintenance, and impact on future decisions. This research will examine the practices of member firms: their decision making process, their approach to implementation, their ongoing struggles/satisfaction, and their current analysis of the value of their past decisions.
